Reception

EYFS Implementation:

The EYFS curriculum is planned across the year with themes. Each theme begins with a ‘Stunning start’ to immerse and engage the children with new learning. Running alongside each theme is a knowledge and skills progression, which is woven into the planning but also considers the interests of the children.

The knowledge and skills are developed by providing:

  • a safe and secure learning environment that allows children to develop positive relationships with adults and peers.

  • high quality continuous provision for all 7 areas of the curriculum which are enhanced and developed according to the children’s interest and skill requirements.

  • a learning environment that promotes independences, allowing children to take risks and learn from their mistakes.

  • learning experiences that draw upon the community in which the children live and their cultural backgrounds and build on the characteristics of effective learning.

  • high quality interactions with adults that impact on the progress of all children and enrich their learning by modelling, questioning, and developing language skills.

  • time for children to practise and consolidate skills and develop knowledge through child-initiated learning and play through continuous provision

  • effective feedback to help facilitate next steps in learning and to develop children’s own skills to become reflective learners.

  • a balance of child-initiated and adult-directed activities throughout the week which is adapted throughout the year to meet the needs of the children.

Daily:

Story time ~ Children will experience a range of different quality text selected to develop children’s understanding of the world and different cultures, to enhance vocabulary and to explore the children’s own interests with the aim to nurture ‘a life-long love of reading.’

Phonics ~ Phonics is an integral part of all teaching, and we build firm foundations for understanding and using phonics in reading and writing in EYFS. We regularly send home and use phonetically decodable texts to review and revise phonemes that have been taught.

Maths ~ The children develop the key skills of number, calculation, and shape so that pupils achieve a deep understanding and the acquisition of mathematical language.

Weekly:

PE ~ Children will have weekly sessions that are planned to develop skills in negotiating space, strength, balance, and coordination. These sessions will either be gym or games based.

Linked Provision ~ Children will have directed tasks to develop fine motor skills which will include using scissors and developing pincer skills. As the year progresses the children have the opportunity to practise and consolidate phonic, writing, and mathematical skills.

Library – children visit the library each week to encourage their love of reading.

Outdoor Learning

Each reception class will have 6 sessions of ‘Outdoor Learning’ across the year where they will have the opportunity play and explore. They will have access to mud kitchen, potion making, den building, bug hunting and pond dipping.

Impact

We aim that all children will make accelerated progress from their starting point and reach their full potential.

Welcome to The Early Years

We know that children learn best when they are happy, feel safe and have meaningful and secure relationships with their peers and adults. Children need to feel loved to feel unique. Each child starting school brings with them their own unique identity, interests, family, likes and dislikes.

Within the EYFS, we aim to create positive relationships and attitudes, knowing each child’s starting point, building on what they know and identifying what support and encouragement they need to become lifelong learners.

We want all our children to be motivated and highly engaged in their learning and to develop and nurture their emotional well-being.

We know that good Early Years learning happens inside, and outside and young children learn best through play, exploration, active learning, creativity, and curiosity for the world around them.

We believe that outdoor learning should be active and fun to develop and strengthen gross motor skills ensuring children are ready for writing. Children learn to collaborate and build self-confidence and resilience in the face of challenges.

Our continuous provision offers children the opportunity to apply and reinforce skills as well as practice and refine what they know, offering challenge to develop and apply new skills.

We have 5 classes in our Early Years and two Outside Areas. We work closely together as a team planning and endeavour to create an exciting, nurturing, and caring environment to ensure all our children get the best possible start to their education.

Welcome to our school family.
